Ayoun el Atrous

Ayoûn el- Atroûs, also Aïoun el- Atrouss, Arabic العيون, is the capital of the administrative unit Hodh El Gharbi in the south of the West African state of Mauritania.

The market town on the edge of rocky mountains located on the Route de l' Espoir, the only east-west the country by crossing the asphalt road, 215 kilometers east of Kiffa and 280 kilometers west of Timbedra. There are simple accommodations.

The city's population increased steadily. It was 1977 8528 and 1988 already at 12,445 people, and 2000 it fell slightly to 11,867. In 2005, the city's population was estimated at 12,635. It was thus in 2005 on the list of largest cities of Mauritania on the position 32 and was the second largest city in Hodh El Gharbi after Tintane.
