The nuclear power plant Balakowo ( [ listen? / I] russian Балаковская АЭС ) located in Russia at Balakowo, about 900 kilometers south of Moscow. It consists of four reactor blocks. Owner and operator of a nuclear power plant is the state enterprise RosEnergoAtom. The nuclear power plant is one of the three most powerful in Russia.

History

Construction of the first reactor block was on 1 December 1980; he was put into operation on 28 December 1985. In the coming years, the construction of three additional reactor units was started, which then went on October 8, 1987, on December 25, 1988 and on April 11, 1993 to the network. The construction on the fifth and sixth reactor block has been set. All reactors were designed for a term of 30 years.

In the four reactor units are pressurized water reactors of Russian design, the so-called third generation VVER with the Model 1000 / 320. The four reactors have a gross capacity of 1,000 megawatts.

The nuclear power plant fed per year an average of 30,000 gigawatt hours into the network and thus represents one of the largest electricity supplier in Russia

Incident

On 4 November 2004 it came into the nuclear power plant to a fault, in consequence of the village and the surrounding area a strong concern of the population occurred and there was partial hoarding. Many frightened residents stocked up in pharmacies reported with iodinated radiation antidotes, witnesses and news agencies. Universities in Samara, 300 km north-east were closed. Shops in the city advised their employees to stay home. The environmental organization Greenpeace in Russia feared a leak. The incident brought back memories of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April 1986 in Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union).

Ultimately, it was in the incident in the power plant according to the operator Energoatom just a minor disturbance. There was no increased radioactive emissions, a threat could be ruled out, said the Russian nuclear agency.

On 4 May 2007, there was an automatic shutdown of two blocks, the cause was a loss in the substation at the power plant. The reactors were worn at 10% rated power and on Saturday 5 May 2007 High drove back to full power.
