The Kola nuclear power plant ( [ listen? / I] russian Кольская АЭС ) is located in the extreme northwest of Russia. It is located on the Kola Peninsula, 20 km from the city Poljarnyje Sori (Russian Полярные Зори ) located in the Murmansk Oblast. History

Construction of the first double block was on May 1, 1970 the first reactor and the second on 1 January 1973. Block 1 was born on June 26, 1973 for the first time critical, the block 2 on 30 November 1974. On 28 December 1973 was the first and, on 21 January 1975, the second reactor unit into commercial operation. In the first double block two 440 MW VVER type are used WWER-440/230 the first generation that have by design a number of safety deficiencies. It is the oldest still operating reactors of this type.

On April 1, 1977 and August 1, 1976 was started the construction work for the second double block with the reactors Kola Kola - 3 and 4. Block 2 was on 7 February 1981 for the first time critical, the block 4 on 7 October 1984. Reactors went on 3 December 1982, on December 6, 1984 in commercial operation. The double block with the reactors 3 and 4 has WWER-440/213 reactors of the second generation of this type of reactor.

The reactors have an operating license for 30 years each. For Units 1 and 2, the approval in 2000 has been extended to 15 years. Thus, the first block up to the year 2018Vorlage: Future / In 4 years, and the second to 2019Vorlage: be / run future in 5 years. The approval of block 3 has been extended to 2036, only block 4 is expected to be shut down in 2014.

On 15 January 2010, a transformer exploded, causing parts of the substation were damaged and the power supply turned out for hours.
