Enlargement of the originally single track to a second track was made in 1891, the Electrification of Bamberg to Lichtenfels and on about the Franconian Forest Railway to Saalfeld was completed on May 10, 1939. In the 1960s, the second main track between Marktschorgast and master Bach was dismantled due to low traffic.

Course

After the start of the track in the Bamberg train already disused branch line to Scheßlitz well as the main train to Würzburg branch off, which runs parallel to the height of allotments and then branches off to the northwest. From left hits a connecting track from the Würzburg distance on the trail, which crosses under the federal highway 70 in the port and on the western edge of town hall passes and parallel to the main road running 4 Breitengüßbach achieved. After the station, the branch line to boars as well as the already decommissioned and dismantled branch line to Dieter village branch off. The route passes under the Federal Highway 73 runs parallel to Main. About the stations Ebing, Zapf village level field on which in future high-speed line will branch off to Erfurt, and Staffelstein reaches distance Lichtenfels.

From the light rock station, the route runs up to and including Mainleus parallel to Main. In Hochstadt - Marktzeuln Frankenwaldklinik path branches off to the Louis city and Saalfeld, in Kulmbach pushed to 1993 the local train from Thurnau and Bayreuth on track. About Untersteinach and Ludwigschorgast the route reaches the station New Market Wirsberg, the private depot had in the past, which now houses the German Steam Locomotive Museum. After the station, the route branches off to Bayreuth, just a few meters from the meets the putative Schlömener curve connecting track to the track to Hof. Following this, the route of the " inclined plane " leads up to the station Marktschorgast, from the end of which it is one- to Stammbachstrasse. About Munchberg and Schwarzenbach an der Saale reaches distance Oberkotzau, united there with the distances from Regensburg and from Selb, leads Moschendorf over the Saale and finally reaches the terminus station yard.

Expansion of state

The route is expanded to double track from Bamberg to High City Marktzeuln and electrified. The subsequent route to court is not electrified, but except for the single-track section Marktschorgast strain Stream also twofold. The distance-based speed limit is in sections, 160 km / h

In 2011, driving between Bamberg and Lichtenfels Intercity Express trains of the Munich- Nuremberg -Leipzig- Berlin ( Hamburg ) every hour. For use ICE-T tilting trains of the series to get 411

On the Bamberg - Lichtenfels section runs every hour a regional express line Nuremberg -Bamberg - Lichtenfels- Sonneberg (Thuringia), every two hours pulling member to Jena Hall Station on Kronach and Saalfeld (Saale ). In Lichtenfels this train is divided or united in the opposite direction. Few Minten before or after the regional express without pulling member to Jena also runs two hours a RE Würzburg-Schweinfurt-Bamberg-Lichtenfels-Hof/Bayreuth. It runs for each other hour only between Lichtenfels and yard / Bayreuth. The offer is there, supplemented by the regional rail line Bamberg Lichtenfels- Kronach ( Saalfeld ).

The regional express trains to Sonnenberg / Jena consist of 160 Km / hr multiple units of the series 442 The line Würzburg-Hof/Bayreuth is due to the tight curves on the " slippery slope " and the non-electrified sections Hochstadt - Marktzeuln - Hof / Bayreuth traveled by the diesel-powered tilting trains series 612, which are separated or combined in the system maintenance New market Wirsberg. As of December 2013 it is planned to use the 612 series only every two hours between Lichtenfels and Bayreuth / yard. In the other hour they should be replaced between Bamberg and Bayreuth / yard by 641 -series vehicles. So far the transfer- connection Würzburg-Bayreuth/Hof in Bamberg is broken, because between Bamberg and Würzburg electric multiple units of class 425 take over the recent performance of the Series 612.

The railway company Agilis drives since 2011 as the winner of the tender for the Bavarian Railway Company on the railway line Bamberg -Hof following services:

  • Of boars over Breitengüßbach to Bamberg ( hour)
  • Bad Unterrodach about Lichtenfels and New Market Wirsberg to Weiden ( hour)
  • Helmbrechts about Munchberg and Hof Hbf to Bad Steben (2- hour)
  • Individual trains Bamberg - Lichtenfels
  • Individual trains Kulmbach - Munchberg

Since December 2012, Hof - Marktredwitz.

Between Marktschorgast and yard the trains running as IRE trains of the Franken- Sachsen- Express from Nuremberg via Bayreuth cycle all the way to Dresden.

E-net Franc

The timetable change in December 2011, was to take a change in the regional Expressen on this route. It was planned to use new railcars of Class 442 on the way to Sonnenberg. This RE should consist of two detachable train parts. The train split would take place alternately in Bamberg (for the RE to Würzburg Hbf) or in Lichtenfels (for the RE to Jena Hall station). Since the series 442 ( Talent 2 ) had delivery and licensing difficulties, this concept could go into effect until a year later the timetable change in December 2012.

Full electrification

In March 2013 plans of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs has been known to provide to completely electrify the line between farm and Hochstadt. For this, the electrification should be included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan. The funding is still unclear.

Dichotomy

The previously through RE- connection Würzburg-Bamberg-Lichtenfels-Bayreuth/Hof faces the dichotomy. This is because the DB Regio francs the call in the area of Main-Spessart won in early 2013, so that wasteful driving with diesel trains is avoided under the contact wire. As of December 2013, it consists of the route (Frankfurt ) Würzburg- Bamberg, which merges into the DB Regio Bayern VB francs and on the other hand the distance Bamberg-Lichtenfels-Bayreuth/Hof will pass to the DB Regio Bayern VB Northeast Bavaria. As of December 2015, a two -hour extension of the Frankfurt coming new TWINDEXX Vario - trains ( new double-decker trains ) from Würzburg to Bamberg is extended. Until then, this area is replaced with vacant in the Munich Regional trains the 425 series on the RE- connection from December 2013. Also, these are used on the RB- connection of Franconia Railway to optimize the Coradia Continental trains. The connection Bamberg-Bayreuth/Hof is loaded from December 2013 in addition to Regioswinger with coming from Erfurt diesel railcars of Class 641.
