Banovići

Banovići ( Serbian Cyrillic Бановићи ) is a small town in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the capital and administrative center of the homonymous municipality in Tuzla Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

History

The place Banovići developed since the late Middle Ages, gained its present meaning, but only at the beginning of coal mining in the 19th century.

From Bosnia war Banovići City was affected only to a small degree. Some settlements in the west of the church were, however, right on the front line and were largely destroyed.

Geography

The territory of the municipality Banovići extends on the northern edge of the heavily wooded Konjuh Mountains, which rises to over 1,000 m. In Konjuh there are coal reserves that are also mined.

Neighboring municipalities are Kladanj, Lukavac, Olovo, Zavidovići and Živinice.

To the municipality include the villages of Gornji Bucik, Trestenica Donja and Gornja Trestenica.

Population

At the 1991 census, the municipality had 26,590 inhabitants Banovići.

The municipality covers 19 locations: Banovići, Banovići ( selo ) Borovac, Catici, Gornji Bucik, Grivice, Lozna, Milići, Mrgan, Omazići, Oskova, Podgorje, Pribitkovići, Repnik, Seona, Stražbenica, Trestenica Donja, Trestenica Gornja, Tulovići and Željova.

Economy

In Banovići has long coal surface mined. Besides the coal is mainly the textile and electrical industries of significance.

Traffic

The road network is relatively well developed. The area has several railway connections, which are used exclusively to freight.
