Barre City is a town in Washington County of the State of Vermont in the United States with 9,052 inhabitants ( according to the census of 2010). It is the center of the granite production Vermont.

The City was founded in 1895 as a separate administrative unit from the surrounding country, Barre Town, spun, after 1880 the population of the region had increased by immigrants from different countries who had been attracted by that became known quarries of about 2,000 to about 10,000.

The town today is the economic and cultural center of the wide radius. After extensive decline of the granite industry - now are in the remaining quarries Barres only 97 people are employed - a large number of medium-sized industry has settled in the town. One of the major employer is the company Bombardier, which operates a Wagon factory here.

The cemetery of the city has become a tourist attraction, because the local grave stones are not only all of the domestic, light gray granite, but partly represent unusual work.

The Vermont Historical Society has its headquarters in Barre City.

Barre is connected in various forms to the outside world. In addition to Interstate 89, which passes to the west of the city, the Vermont State Route 62 begins in the town center in the industrial center of Vermont, Burlington; and U.S. Highway 302 runs through Barre City. The Edward F. Knapp State Airport is located about six kilometers west of the city center. Also, a rail link, the New England Central Railroad, still exists. Other rail links, including the railway Montpelier Junction Williamstown and the tram Montpelier -Barre are no longer practiced today or hold not more in Barre.
