Washington County (Vermont)

Washington County is a county located in the U.S. state of Vermont in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Montpelier.

Geography

The County in central Vermont has an area of 1801 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lamoille County, Caledonia County, Orange County, Addison County and Chittenden County.

History

Washington County was formed on November 1, 1810 from parts of Caledonia County, Chittenden County and Orange County. Originally it was called Jefferson County, received its present name on 8 November 1814.

Demographic data

1900-1990

According to the census of 2000, there were 58 039 people in the county. There were 23 659 households, and 15,047 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.05 % White, 0.47 % African American, 0.30 % Native American, 0.57 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.26 % percent from other ethnic groups; 1.34% were descended from two or more races. 1.26 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 23 659 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.60 % were married couples living together, 9.20 % had a female householder with no husband. 36.40 % were non-families. 28.50 % of all households and 10.20% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.91.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 23.50 % under the age of 18, 8.90 % from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44 years, 26.00% between 45 and 64 years and 12.90% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.10 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.10 males.

The median income for a household was $ 40,972, and the median income for a family was $ 51,075. Males had a median income of $ 33,181, women $ 26,369. The per capita income was $ 21,113. 8.00 % of the population and 5.50 % of families are below the poverty line. 9.10% of those under age 18 and 6.80% were 65 years or older.

Cities and Towns

In addition to the below independent communities exist in Washington County, four dependent villages, which are co-managed by the parent towns: Cabot Village, Marshfield Village, Northfield Village and Waterbury Village.
