Barry Waddell

Barry Waddell ( born January 1, 1937) is an Australian former racing cyclist.

Barry Waddell was 1963-1970 cyclist and in that time one of the most successful cyclist of his country, which started rarely but internationally. 17 times he was national champion, including 1964 and 1968 in the road race and 1967 in the individual pursuit on the track. Between 1964 and 1968 Waddell won five times in a row, the Herald Sun Tour, which went in those years about 1200 km in nine stages.

1965 accomplished Waddell in a few weeks great sporting achievements: First, he won the race Melbourne to Lakes Entrance on the weekend, Tuesday he broke the record of Hubert Opperman for the route from Adelaide to Melbourne ( 22 hours), drove on Saturday on Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic, launched at a three-day fair race in Port Pirie, to then start at the Herald Sun Tour on Saturday.

Waddell started at 27 six-day races, most of them on home soil, of which he won five.

Twice - in 1964 and 1966 - Barry Waddell was awarded the Sir Hubert Opperman Trophy as Australia's cyclist of the year. In 1975, he won the Masters in Austria World Champion title in the road race.

After the end of his active cycling career Waddell took over a bicycle shop in his home town of Burwood, which he gave up for reasons of age, 2011.
