BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is one for the British Broadcasting Corporation ( BBC )-owned orchestra in Scotland.

The orchestra was founded in 1935 by Scottish composer and conductor Ian Whyte as the " BBC Scottish Orchestra" and was first in Edinburgh, later based in Glasgow. The emphasis of the orchestra 's repertoire is on little-known romantic and contemporary music; this also includes world premieres of works of Scottish and important foreign composers. Among other things, it has worked with composers such as Benjamin Britten, Dmitri Shostakovich, György Kurtág and Tan Dun.

The orchestra performs - in addition to travel abroad - regularly at the BBC Proms in London, the Edinburgh Festival and the Cheltenham Festival. Each season, an extensive tour of Scotland takes place that take into account the larger cities and the province.
