Belfays

Belfays is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Belfays is located on 876 m, 7 km east of Maîche and about 29 km south of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the Jura: a scenic location on a sloping hillside to the west of the height of Belfays, in the northeast of the vast plateau of Maîche.

The area of 3.20 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The western part of the area is occupied by the weakly in relief plateau Maîche, which is on average 800 m. It is mainly composed of meadow and pasture land. The plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. To the east, the municipality's area covers over the slope of Belfays on the adjacent ridge that separates the plateau from the deep Doubs Valley. The predominantly forested height is divided into the comb of Belfays ( 913 m), the Pré Malade ( 980 m the highest elevation of Belfays ) and the bell Pré Maillot. In between are various depressions that open up to the high plateau of Maîche out.

Neighboring communities of Belfays are Ferrieres -le- Lac and Fessevillers in the north, the east, and Urtière Damprichard the south and west.

History

In the Middle Ages Belfays belonged to the territory of the county of La Roche Saint -Hippolyte. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.
