Cour-Saint-Maurice

Cour -Saint -Maurice is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Cour -Saint -Maurice is located on 520 m, 7 km west of Maîche and about 29 km south of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The double municipality extends in the Jura, on a terrace on the northern side of the valley of the Dessoubre, between the heights of Montaigu in the north and the plateau of Maîche in the south.

The area of ​​4.47 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The southern boundary runs along the Dessoubre, the deeply cut in spiral running in the surrounding Jura plateau of south-west flows to the northeast. The steep valley slopes are dominated in different places of striking chalk cliffs. From the river, the municipality's area extends northward over a 100 m high escarpment on the broad terrace of the Cour and Saint-Maurice. This site terrace is dominated by a steep, mostly forested and an average of 150 m high slope, which leads on to the height of Les Plains. With 696 m find the highest mountains of Cour -Saint -Maurice is achieved. This amount is divided by the erosive action of the Dessoubre and its tributaries in different, partly rocky protrusions. In the north- east, the municipality area extends to the edge of Mongens above Vauclusotte.

The municipality consists of several hamlets and villages, namely:

  • Cour (520 m) in a trough on the northern slope of the valley of the Dessoubre
  • Saint- Maurice (520 m ) on the grounds terrace on the northern side of the valley of the Dessoubre
  • Le Pont -Neuf (410 m) at the Dessoubre
  • Le Moulin -du -Bas (421 m) at the Dessoubre
  • Le Moulin du Dessus (425 m) at the mouth of the stream of Vaucluse in the Dessoubre

Neighboring communities of Cour -Saint -Maurice are Belleherbe in the north, and Vauclusotte Orgeans -Blanche Fontaine in the east, Battenans - Varin Vaucluse in the south and the west.

History

The parish of Saint- Maurice is one of the oldest in the region. It was founded in the 6th century by the monks of the monastery of Saint- Maurice in the canton of Valais. In the Middle Ages was a part of today's municipal territory to rule Châtillon- sous- Maîche. The domination of the other part was for the family of Saint- Maurice, who owned a castle in Cour. Together with the Franche- Comté reached both towns with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. During the French Revolution the castle was demolished. Since the time around 1790 and Cour Saint- Maurice formed a double community.

Attractions

Originally dating from the 12th century church of Saint -Maurice was extensively rebuilt in the 18th century. In the village are farmhouses in the traditional style of the Franche -Comté are from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Population

With 165 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Cour -Saint -Maurice is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1906 282 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1980s.

Economy and infrastructure

Cour -Saint -Maurice was well into the 20th century, a predominantly by agriculture ( livestock and dairy farming, arable farming and fruit growing ) embossed village. The water power of the Dessoubre was used early for the operation of mills and sawmills. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses, including a sawmill, a furniture factory as well as several of the hospitality sector. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The community is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Maîche after Sancey- le -Grand. Further road links exist with Vaucluse, Battenans - Varin and Rosureux. Passing through the municipality, the railway Dole Belfort, the Gare Saint -Maurice is, however, no longer served.
