Charmauvillers

Charmauvillers is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Charmauvillers is located on 849 m, 9 km east of Maîche and 32 km south-southeast of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on the south slope of the inclined Pré Maillot high above the valley of the Doubs, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​10.47 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The southern boundary runs along the Doubs, which here flows through a canyon-like incised into the plateaus of the Jura valley to the northeast. At La Goule the river is dammed to form a valley lake. The steep, mostly forested valley slopes are traversed by striking Kalkfelsbändern. From the river, the municipality's area extends northward over the steep slope down to the grounds and terraces of Charmauvillers corbière, which are separated from each other by the incision of the Bief d' Étoz. In the north of the border by the heights of Côte du rank, Bois des Grands Champs, Col de la Vierge and Pré Maillot is marked, which separate the Doubs Valley from the adjacent plateau Maîche. History

Significant parts of the village were destroyed by boulders rolling down in an earthquake in 1356. Together with the Franche -Comté Charmauvillers came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. To a field change occurred in 1868, when the previously independent scattered settlement Les Essarts - CUENOT was merged with Charmauvillers.

Attractions

The village church of Charmauvillers was built in the 19th century. In the village are farmhouses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the traditional style of the Haut-Doubs. In the Doubs Valley is the chapel Bief d' Étoz, which was built in 1694.

With 274 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Charmauvillers one of the small communities of the department of Doubs.
