Benigno Fitial

Benigno Fitial Repeki ( born November 27, 1945 Saipan ) is an American politician. From 2006 to 2013 he was governor of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Career

Benigno Fitial attended to 1964 Mt Carmel High School on the island of Saipan. He then studied at the University of Guam. Prior to his political career, he worked in various professions. He was, among other things, head of the newsroom of a radio station and accountants in the public sector. He also worked in the banking industry, the insurance industry and in other areas. Among other things, he led the company Tan Holdings Corporation, which manufactured clothing. Politically he was first a member of the Republican Party. In 2001 he left the party and founded the Covenant Party. In 2011, he returned to the Republican Party.

2001 ran unsuccessfully for Fitial nor the Office of the Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands. Two years later he was elected to the House of Representatives of the Territory, which he became president. In 2005 he was elected as the successor of Juan Babauta to the new governor of his home. This office he stepped on 9 January 2006. After a re-election he was able to exercise until his resignation on 20 February 2013. Shortly before, a successful impeachment took place against Fitial, in which he was accused of corruption and abuse of office in the House of Representatives. With his resignation, he came to be heard by the Senate of the Northern Mariana Islands before, which would be followed in the immediate ouster also a positive outcome. An official appointed by him Lieutenant Governor Eloy Inos, succeeded him.
