Bergolo

Bergolo ( Bèrgoj Piedmontese ) is a municipality with a population of 68 (as at 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Cuneo (CN ), Region Piedmont. It is 95 km southeast of Turin and 79 km northeast of Cuneo.

Geography

Bergolo is situated on a high ridge in the Alta Langa between the Bormidatal and the Uzzonetal.

The neighboring municipalities are Cortemilia, Levice, Pezzolo Valle Uzzone and Torre Bormida.

History

The place is probably inhabited since ancient times. The name comes from the Late Latin Bergulum and means place of heather. The first mention dates back to 1091 when the village passed into the possession of Bonifacio del Vasto. 1532 Bergolo came into the possession of the Savoy, and remained there until the end of the monarchy. After the decline due to strong migration since the end of World War II, experienced the place since the 1990s, another boom as an artist and tourist destination.
