Manta, Piedmont

Manta ( Manta on La Piedmontese ) is a municipality with 3712 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Cuneo ( CN) in the Italian region of Piedmont.

Geography

Manta is on the edge of the Cozie Alps at the output of the Valle Varaita. It is 59 km south of Turin, 30 km north of Cuneo and 4 km south of Saluzzo.

Manta is located on the railway line Savigliano Saluzzo -Cuneo. It is connected via the state road SS 589 dei Laghi di Avigliana that runs along the edge of the Alps to the road network.

The neighboring municipalities are Lagnasco Pagno, Saluzzo and Verzuolo.

History

In the 10th century, Benedictine monks founded a monastery, from which even the Church of Santa Maria del Monastero is preserved. To the monastery, the village developed.

1175 Manta fief was the Margraviate of Saluzzo. Marquis Tommaso I built on the foundations of an older fort a castle. Tommaso III. bequeathed to his illegitimate son in 1416 this Valerano, they expanded into its prestigious residence. 1548 Manta came to France in 1601 and to Savoy.
