Bernkastel-Wittlich

The district of Bernkastel -Wittlich is geographically the second largest county (after the district of Bitburg -Prüm ) in Rhineland- Palatinate. It is bordered to the south and west by the district of Trier -Saar castle, on the west by the district of Bitburg -Prüm, in the north of the county volcanic Eifel region and on the east by the counties of Cochem- Zell, Birkenfeld and the Rhein- Hunsrück-Kreis.

Geography

The district is situated on both sides of the Moselle, which flows northeast through the county from the southwest. In the north, the landscape rises to the Eifel out in the south to the Hunsrück. In the extreme south of the district is the highest mountain in the Hunsrück, the heir head ( 816 m), the highest mountain in Rhineland -Palatinate.

History

Today the district of Bernkastel -Wittlich was fragmented before the end of the 18th century in many territories. In the caused by the French Revolutionary Wars, the region came under French rule. In 1815 it came under Prussian administration and 1816 the two circles Bernkastel Wittlich and that were part of the 1946 State of Rhineland -Palatinate. The two counties were combined at the district reform in 1969 to the present county, where also some communities of the dissolved district cell were included (Mosel), the area around Rhaunen came to the district of Birkenfeld.

The county since 1994 has been the initiative Region Trier ( IRT), the regional public institutions, governments, universities, companies, banks and committed individual with the aim, the region's future as economically attractive, culturally rich and ecologically intact area with high life - and to secure recreational value, work in partnership.

On 25 May 2009, the county received the loaned by the federal government entitled " City of Diversity".

Coat of arms

Description: Under a silver shield with full main red cross a bent-in, rising, geschachtete of red and silver lace; right in a red gold cancer, left in red two upright silver key whose leaves are closing down half on each other (Coat - approval December 21, 1971 )

Meaning: The cross stands for the archbishopric of Trier, which dominated the majority of the county area. The two keys are the arms of the town of Wittlich removed. The cancer is Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa, real name Cryfftz ( = cancer) and the red- silver chess for the County of Sponheim, to among other things, the town of Traben- Trarbach belonged.

Traffic

Opened by the Prussian state railways in 1879 the main railway Koblenz -Trier follows in the district not the loops of the valley, but performs pretty straight forward at some distance there. Only the 1883 -built spur track ( Bullay ) Punderich - Traben-Trarbach is located on the banks of the Moselle.

In the same year the former county town of Bernkastel -Kues received at the station Wengerohr - Wittlich Hbf today - a connection from the main line here. 1885 was followed by a branch-line to the town of Wittlich, which was extended 1909/1910 to the neighboring town of Daun. On the Hunsrückhöhenstraße wrong since 1902 a branch line from simmering to Morbach and 1903 continue to Hermes wedge.

The many towns and villages along the Mosel were connected only through the Mosel Bahn AG in the years 1903-05 to the windings of the valley following a small path which ranged from Trier to Bullay. A body set up by the General German Klein Railroad Company in 1900, mainly for freight narrow gauge railway connected Bins field with the route Cologne - Trier in the station Philipp home.

The extensive rail network of 175 km length has been reduced by 134 km in the years 1950 to 1988:

It now includes only the main line with a branch line ( Bullay - Traben-Trarbach ), ie a total of 41 km.

By the district the federal highways lead 1 (Trier -Koblenz ) and 60 (Liège Cross Wittlich ) whose continuation is rescheduled as B 50 through the Hunsrück towards the Rhine -Main area. Furthermore, the federal highways 50, 53 and 327 ( Hunsrückhöhenstraße ) run through the county.
