Berthold V, Duke of Zähringen

Duke Berthold V of Zahringen, also Berchtold V. (* 1160, † February 18, 1218 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was the last Duke of the original line of Zaehringen.

History

Berthold V. succeeded his father Berthold IV 1186. He defeated the beginning of his reign the Burgundian nobility and operational settlement policy in today's Bernese Oberland and in the area of Lake Lucerne. So he expanded tuna and founded in 1191 the city of Bern, which he expanded the focus of his reign. In the battle of Ulrichen 1211 failed his access to the Valais.

1198 he was with the royal election in Cologne by a minority as the successor of Henry VI. elected, but refrained for concessions in favor of Philip of Swabia. These concessions consolidated the ownership of Zaehringen in Ortenau, the Breisgau and of today's Switzerland by acquiring rights over the monastery of All Saints, Schaffhausen and Breisach. 1200 Berthold V. began the first extension of the Freiburg city parish church; her name is probably from there ( or until the beginning of the second extension 1250) Freiburger Münster. There he is buried.

However, his supposed tomb in the Freiburg Münster was on a high grave of Count of Freiburg and was falsely attributed to him. It comes from the Münsterbauhütte of Johann Parler.

After the death of Berthold V. the Zähringers possessions between the Counts of Kyburg, and the counts of Urach were divided, the city of Bern became a free imperial city.

At Berthold remember in Bern the Zähringerbrunnen from 1535, the Zähringerplatz monument from 1601 in Berner Munster and the Zähringerplatz monument of 1847 on the Nydegg.

Marriage and issue

Berthold married Clementia of Auxonne a daughter of Stephen III. Auxonne. Clear evidence are no descendants. However, there are several messages of murdered sons, and the following:
