Origin and History

The exact origin of the Blackmouth Cur is not released. The two main theories about its origin claim an origin either from the mountains of Tennessee or Mississippi. In any case, it is in the breed a hunting and guard dog, the white settlers in North America, which presumably originated from the crossroads of Europe with domestic dogs.

Description

The Blackmouth Cur is a medium sized dog from the cursor type. In the UKC breed standard the ability to work is named as the main criterion of evaluation explicitly. The coat is short and lies at closely, the colors are red, yellow, fawn, black, brown and brindle, with black mask or without. A little white is allowed, as long as it does not cover more than ten percent of the body surface. Dilute variants are also permitted. Flecking, mottling, Merle color and a white collar are not admitted.

The head is in proportion to the body quite large, the muzzle is slightly shorter than the skull and separated from this with a distinct stop. The lips are on tight. A complete scissor bite is desired. Pre-or undershot bite leads to disqualification. The hanging ears are short to medium in length and set high.

Desirable is a blown Web endurance dog, whose body length is equal to its height at the withers, or slightly longer. The back is straight, the loins are slightly bent. The chest is broad and muscular, with the distance between forelegs at least four inches should be (10 cm).

Use

The Blackmouth Cur is a fast hunting dog chasing both on sight and by means of smell. It is used for hunting squirrels and raccoons, he drives up to the type of Coonhounds a tree and barks, but also for the wild boar and bear hunting. In pursuit of the Wilds he is not track loud barks but only occasionally.

In addition to use as a hunting dog, the breed can also be used as a protection and guard dog.
