Canandaigua Lake
The Canandaigua Lake is the fourth largest lake of the Finger Lakes in upstate New York.
The city of Canandaigua is located on the northern shore. The place Naples is a few miles south of the lake. The lake was created as a moraine at the end of the last ice age. The name " Canandaigua " is derived from a Seneca word meaning " Selected Landmark " means.
The Canandaigua Lake is 26 km long, up to 2.4 km wide and has a water area of 43.5 km ² to 210 m altitude. Near its northern end lies the island of Squaw Iceland. About 50 percent of the surrounding region are forest. The remaining area is used primarily for agricultural purposes. Of the 58 km of shoreline to 97 % are privately owned. The Canandaigua Lake State Marine Park is located within the boundaries of the City of Canandaigua at the northern end of the lake. It offers a dock and lake access. The fishing season runs from May through mid-October.
History
The first steamboat in the Finger Lakes region was the Enterprise. This was in 1825 laid the keel. The steamboat trip on the Canandaigua Lake began in 1827 with the Lady of the Lake and ended in 1935, when the Idler ceased passenger service. There were 14 larger boats that were then commercially on the lake in use. Today the Canandaigua Lady, a replica of a double-deck paddle steamer of the 19th century, the tradition continues. The Indians and the white settlers closed north of the lake the Treaty of Canandaigua. The document can be found in the Memorial Museum. In the surrounding area of the lake, many families from the nearby Rochester have a second home.
Squaw Iceland
Squaw Iceland is located on the north end of Canandaigua Lake. It is one of the smallest Fish and Wildlife Management Area in New York State and is one of the two islands of the eleven Finger Lakes Lakes.
Attractions
The Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park is located on the northern shore. The County Road 12 leads from the south end of the lake to Naples and offers beautiful views of the lake, especially in the fall. Also along the road is the new South Bristol Overlook.
