Carlos Romero Barceló

Carlos Antonio Romero Barceló ( born September 4, 1932 in San Juan ) is a Puerto Rican politician. Between 1977 and 1985 he was Governor of Puerto Rico; 1993 to 2001 he represented this U.S. foreign territory as a delegate ( Resident Commissioner ) in the House of Representatives of the United States.

Career

Carlos Romero Barceló attended the Phillips Exeter Academy until 1949 in New Hampshire and then studied until 1953 at Yale University. After a subsequent law studies at the University of Puerto Rico and his 1956 was admitted to the bar he began in San Juan to work in this profession. Between 1969 and 1976 he was the successor of Felisa Rincón de Gautier mayor of this city. In 1976 he was a member of the Board of Mayor Association of the United States. In the same year he was president of the National Association of Towns. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party and the Puerto Rican Partido Nuevo Progresista. Between 1974 and 1985, and again from 1989 to 1992, he served as Chairman of the PNP.

On January 2, 1977 Romero Barceló was the successor of Rafael Hernández Colón new Governor of Puerto Rico. After a very tight re-election he was able to complete in 1985 two terms in that office until January 2nd. These were mainly in the early 1980s by an economic crisis, coupled with a high unemployment rate, embossed. In 1980 and 1981 he was chairman of the Southern Governors Association. In 1984, he defeated his predecessor Colon. From 1986 to 1989 he was a member of the Senate of Puerto Rico.

In the congressional elections of 1992, Romero Barceló was as a non-voting delegate for four years in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Antonio Colorado on January 3, 1993. After a re-election, he could remain until January 3, 2001 at the Congress. In 2000 he was not re-elected; In 2004, he competed unsuccessfully then to his party's nomination for the congressional elections. Today he lives in his hometown of San Juan.
