Cedd

Cedd (also Cedde, Ceddi or Ceadwalla; * to 620; † October 26 664) was an Anglo-Saxon missionary, bishop and Dept. He is venerated as a saint.

Life

Cedd and his brothers Chad ( Ceadda ), Cynebill and Caelin were from Northumbria. Together with his brothers, he was educated at the monastery of Abbot Aidan of Lindisfarne ( 635-651 ) in the iro -Scottish tradition as a monk and priest. After Peada, the son and co-regent of King Penda, was baptized by Finan of Lindisfarne 653 in the vicinity of Hadrian's Wall, the missionaries Cedd, Adda, Betti and Diuma escorted him out of Northumbria to the mean fishing.

In the same year ( 653 ) Cedd was sent with another priest at the request of the king Sigeberht II in Essex from Oswiu to Essex, where he evangelized successfully. His successes were so great that he was ordained on a visit to Lindisfarne from financing bishop of the East Saxons. After his return to Essex he ordained in his support other priests and deacons, and continued his work in which he had founded monastic missionary centers Ythancaestir ( Bradwell -on-Sea ) and Tilaburg ( Tilbury ) continued. Ythancaestir was built on and from the remains of the Roman fort Othona. Worship

His feast day is celebrated on January 7. In the iconography Cedd is represented as a bishop with chalice and crook. The joint presentation with the Saints Chad and Diuma is in use.
