Central Macedonia

Central Macedonia, Central Macedonia as well, (Greek Κεντρική Μακεδονία, Kendrikí Makedonía ) is one of the thirteen regions of Greece and forms the central part of Greek Macedonia. Capital city is Thessaloniki.

Geography

Central Macedonia, with an area of 18 811 square kilometers, the largest of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece. It is bordered to the north by the states Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria. To the west it borders the Administrative Region of West Macedonia in the south to the region of Thessaly and Central Macedonia in the east is bordered to the Administrative Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The South Central Macedonia is the coast of the Aegean Sea as well as the autonomous Mount Athos.

Policy

The first regional elections in Greece in 2010 showed a clear majority of New Democracy for the Regional Council; the post of governor could Panagiotis Psomiadis win for his list

Regional districts and municipalities

The Central Macedonia region is divided into seven regional districts that correspond to the fields of up to 2010 passed prefectures. Proportional to their population, they send a certain number of MEPs in the 71 -member Regional Council.

Economy

Expressed in comparison with the EU GDP in purchasing power standards reached Central Macedonia an index of 78.7 (EU -25: 100 ) (2003 ). The unemployment rate in 2005 was 11.1%.
