Charles W. Gillet

Charles William Gillet ( * November 26, 1840 in Addison, Steuben County, New York, † December 31, 1908 in New York City ) was an American politician. Between 1893 and 1905 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Charles Gillet attended the common schools and the Delaware Literary Institute in Franklin in Delaware County. Between 1861 and 1863 he served during the Civil War as a soldier in the army of the Union. In 1863, he had to acknowledge his military service after being wounded. Then he made in Addison window sash, doors and blinds. Between 1878 and 1886 he was there and post holder. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1892 Gillet was the 29th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John Raines on March 4, 1893. After five re- elections, he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1905 six legislative periods. In this time of the Spanish-American War was from 1898. Since 1903, he represented the 33rd district of his state. From 1895 to 1903 Gillet was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Department of Agriculture; 1903 to 1905 he headed the Committee on Government property.

In 1904, Charles Gillet forgo another Congress candidate. He died on December 31, 1908 in New York City and was buried in his home town of Addison.
