Christian August Pohlenz

Christian August Pohlenz ( born July 3, 1790 in Sallgast, † March 10, 1847 in Leipzig ) was a German composer and singing teacher and served from 1827 to 1835 as the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Life

Pohlenz studied from 1814 law at the University of Leipzig, but soon devoted himself entirely to music. In 1817 he became organist at St Paul's Church in Leipzig, in 1821 at the city's St. Thomas Church. In 1820 he became a member of the Masonic Lodge Apollo in Leipzig.

As a successor to the late Johann Philipp Christoph Schulz, he finally in 1827 the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Probably because Konzertdirektion was not one hundred percent satisfied with his work, he was terminated on 16 April 1835. He was succeeded by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. This conducted by Pohlenz ' death a farewell concert in his honor.

Pohlenz earned special merits as a singing teacher. His most important student was Livia Gerhardt.
