Chuvash ( Chuvash Чăваш Ен ( Чăваш Республики ) / Tschăwasch Jen ( Tschăwasch Respubliki ), Russian Чувашия / Tschuwaschija ) is an autonomous republic in the European part of Russia.

Geography

Chuvashia is located in the Volga Federal District in Eastern Europe. The Republic is located at the headwaters of the Volga River, about 600 kilometers east of Moscow. To the north it borders Mari El, to the east of Tatarstan, on the west by the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and on the southwest by Mordovia.

History

Chuvashia belonged to the Khanate of Kazan, before it fell mid-16th century to Russia. Unlike other Turkic peoples of the Chuvash were Christianised in the 18th century. Chuvashia was during the Soviet Union an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ( ASSR ). 1991 became a republic within Russia.

Population

The small republic is one of the most densely populated republics of Russia. The Chuvash, a Turkic people, make up the majority of the population. Significant minorities are the Russians, Tatars and Mordvins; smaller minority Ukrainians and Mari.

The official languages ​​are the Chuvash and Russian language. The majority of the population ( the Chuvash ) is committed to the Russian Orthodox Church, a minority to Islam.

Economy

Chuvashia is one of the richer republics of Russia. Machinery, light industry, wood and food industries are the major sectors of the economy.

Administrative divisions and cities

The Chuvash Republic is divided into 21 Rajons and 5 urban districts.

Capital city is Cheboksary, the second largest city is its satellite city Novocheboksarsk. These two and the next largest cities Kanash, Alatyr and Schumerlja form the five urban districts. In total there are nine cities in the Republic.
