The Estadio Jalisco told you going until the end of July 2010 with the local rivals Chivas Guadalajara and, since 2009, again with the playing in the second division club Leones Negros University.

History

The Atlas Club was founded in 1916 located in the southeast suburb of Guadalajara Tlaquepaque by a group of young people who longed for the game that she had met while studying in England. Godfather for the selected club name was that of Greek myth, after a Titan named Atlas carrying the world on his shoulders. Founding member and namesake of the association was Juan José " Lico " Cortina, who with the club Asturias won the Mexican championship a few years later.

The fact that Atlas was founded by the direct import of football from England, Chivas this sport but in Mexico itself - by a foreigner, namely the Belgian Edgar Everaert - met, reveals a lot about the original milieu of the two later major clubs in the city. Because the founding members of Atlas came from all families of the local upper class, while the already ten years earlier, founded Club Deportivo Guadalajara from the beginning became a rallying point of local workers. A detailed description of the rivalry of these two clubs can be found here.

It soon moved into Atlas, with land in El Paradero ( the venue Parque El Paradero ), which is located on the way from Tlaquepaque Guadalajara. The name of this place comes from a tram stop, which was once located here. In this device for a football school, because of the Atlistas had finally received her nickname " académicos " was born.

No sooner had Atlas launched, it could play out the advantage of having learned the game at the home of football itself. But the book to mark the centenary anniversary of club Chivas Guadalajara called to be as decisive advantage in the then -favored Atlas by some dubious refereeing decisions. What is certain is that Atlas had with his appearance immediately broken the previous supremacy of Chivas and came 1918-1921 four times in a row to championship honors. But from 1922 again dominated the club Guadalajara who also won the championship 1922-1925 four times in a row and for the Club Nacional was founded in 1923 in the coming years to the greatest sporting challenge.

In the 1920s and 1930s Atlas fell back a little and threatened to lose the connection while the Club Nacional became the new main rivals Chivas Guadalajara in the city. But Atlas recovered just in time enough to be included in the 1943 re- introduced along with Chivas as one of two founding members of the city of Guadalajara, nationwide professional league.

División In the early years the Primera Atlas had returned to its former strength, left his old rival Chivas regularly behind and won in 1951 even as the first club of the city the champion of Mexico. This success was, however, will never be repeated. For the first time in the season 1951/52, Atlas was placed behind Chivas. Only two years later came the deep case. End of the season 1953/54, Atlas had to dismount for the first time in the second division.

Although succeeded the immediate resurgence. But before ten years lasting supremacy over Chivas was once broken for a long time, especially since the city rivals developed in the coming years campeonisimo; the towering team in Mexico.

The 1970s and 1980s were marked by a constant struggle for survival and Halbfinaleinzüge to the national championship ( as in 1972 /73 and 1984/85 ) formed in this period only a positive exception. In contrast atlas in this period rose twice in the second division from ( end of season 1970/71 or 1977/78 ), although at least the immediate return was achieved in both cases, the football House of Lords.

But especially the third - and so far last - descent in the spring of 1978 the club had severely set back. Since the resurgence of the 1979 Atlas devoured his strength over the years in a nerve-wracking battle against relegation. 1979/80 were thought to be due to a class only scored more point against the Orsnachbarn Jalisco. A year later, Atlas had to play in the relegation against Unión de Curtidores; calculated against those opponents, against whom one was in 1978 failed. But this time the Atlistas prevailed. 1981/82 it was again in the play-offs; this time against Tampico, against which one needed a third game, to keep themselves in the top division. Also 1982/83 it remained long in a relegation battle and eventually escaped with three points ahead of Zacatepec. Not only that, you could only laboriously secure in the seasons 1986/87 and 1988/89 respectively to relegation.

Only in the 1990s experienced Atlas another renaissance. So you reached several occasions since then the semi-finals in the play- offs to the Mexican Championship and scored in the overall annual ranking of the ten seasons between 1992/93 and 2001/ 02 almost regularly a better score than the otherwise mostly overpowering neighbor Chivas. But while the Chivistas in this for them relatively bleak phase even once able to win the championship (1997), it was enough for the Atlistas only once for the final in the Clausura 1998 /99. But after two extremely dramatic and high-scoring games against Toluca ( 3:3 and 2:2 ) were subject to the red - blacks ultimately a little unhappy with 4:5 on penalties.
