Coat of arms of Mauritius

The coat of arms of the Republic of Mauritius was introduced on 25 August 1906 by King Edward VII.

Design of the coat of arms

The coat of arms is quartered blue-gold. The first field is a golden ship. The second field displays the trefoil (2:1) Asked green palms, the third a silver star floating over a mountain of the same color. The final field is a perpendicular asked, with the beard left-facing red key is visible, pointing with a quatrefoil Ride to the upper plate edge. The shield is right held by a Dodo, an extinct flightless bird that lived only in Mauritius and Reunion; left takes a Sambar this position. The animals are each on the banner and are diagonally divided by a red and white battlements cut. There is one white and green sugar cane rod between the shield and the shield holders. Meaning of the symbols

The ship on the sign stands for the colonization of the island from outside by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British. The three palm trees right next to symbolize the tropical vegetation and the three dependencies of the State of Mauritius, the Cargados Carajos Islands, the Agalega Islands and the island of Rodrigues. Key and star to illustrate the strategic position of the country as a single island off the coast of the African continent in the Indian Ocean and repeat the motto of the country.
