Corbinian

St. Korbinian, also Corbinian, (* 670-680 at Arpajon south of Paris, † September 8 724-730 in Freising ) was a Christian missionary and is regarded as the first bishop of Freising. The anniversary of the saint in the Catholic Church is in the German November 20, just as in the Orthodox Church; in the Evangelical Church in Germany, it is the 8th of September.

Church History circumstances of the time

In the 8th century, the Christian faith was spread by missionaries. Southern Germany lay to the east of the then undivided Frankish Empire. Written traditions from this period are extremely rare, so times in the article are inaccurate.

Life

Korbinian, son of Irish Corbiniana and a Franken called Waltekis (also Waldekiso ), decided in his early years to the life of a hermit. He built his hermitage next to a chapel not far from the place of birth, the Saint Germain de Châtres to have been ( at Arpajon ). 709 or 710, he embarked on his second pilgrimage to Rome. Along the way, he founded a small monastery in Caines ( Merano ).

In Rome the Pope motivated him to finish the hermit existence in favor of missionary work in Gaul. The new task no longer satisfied him after a few years. He retired seven years later once again pope. Corbinian desire for a hermitage was not met. The Pope sent him back into the Frankish Empire back, he came on his journey in the later Bavaria.

At the request of the Duke of Bavaria Grimoald he was around the year 720 in Freising down that an important religious center in the German south matured by Corbinian apostolic work after his lifetime ( Benedictine abbey Weihenstephan ).

As bishop, he stayed on faith and morals. After a dispute with the Duke Korbinian had to leave its territory. He had the Duke prohibited by the damaligem canon law marriage with Pilitrud (also Plectrude ), the wife of his deceased brother, accused and thereby incurred their hatred.

Korbinian went to the monastery in Caines and worked in the current South Tyrol few years. After the death of Grimoald his successor, Duke Hugbert to continue the interrupted job honorably asked him. To 725 Korbinian built a house of prayer ( Oratorio ). In this chapel of St. Stephen was thought. On a September 8 724-730 died of a missionary bishop.

His remains were transferred after the funeral in accordance with his will after Caines. Around the year 769 around the remains were brought back under pressure from the Korbinian adoring faithful to Freising and placed in the cathedral crypt of the Cathedral of Freising on a 20 November. Since the end of the 19th century, they rest in the then newly created Neo-Romanesque Korbinian shrine.

The Church calendar name of the Evangelical Church in Germany reminds September 8 at Korbinian as a teacher of the church. ( The Protestant Church commemorates Saint exclusively as faith models, see Augsburg Confession, Article 21 )

Roman Catholic

Feast day of the saint is the 8th of September in Germany November 20, and in France.

In 2006, the German Bishops' Conference has decided the Feast of Saint. Korbinian record with the date November 20 as Remembrance Day is not offered in the regional calendar of the German language area.

Orthodox

The Orthodox Churches remember on November 20 at Korbinian, who is also regarded there as a saint.

Patronages

Korbinian is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and patron saint of Freising in Bavaria.

Several churches in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising have the holy Korbinian as patron. Built in the 1990s, modern cathedral of Evry, in the diocesan territory Corbinian birthplace Arpajon is located, is dedicated to St. Korbinian and contains a bronze statue of the saint. Furthermore, Korbinian is the patron of 2006-2011 the newly built church of San Corbiniano in the district Infernetto in Rome.

Iconography

Korbinian is presented accompanied by a bear wearing a load beam and is called as Korbiniansbär. This is based on a legend that wants to know that a wild bear had torn on a pilgrimage of Korbinian the beast of burden. The Holy had burdened him with punishment for his belongings and was moved with the bear to Rome.

The coat of arms of the city of Freising as well as the papal coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI. ( the 1977-1982 Archbishop of Munich and Freising was ) lead the Korbinian bears.

The bear as the Holy attribute of St. Korbinian is exemplified by the statue Ignaz Günther 1761 in Rott am Inn and at other sacred art objects (also see Korbiniansbär ).
