Counts and Dukes of Guise

The county of Guise and the Duchy of Guise had dominions in northern France. Originally a Seigneurie, Guise was charged in 1417 for René of Anjou, the younger son of Louis II, titular king of Naples to the county. To the possession, there were clashes with the house Luxembourg (1425-1444), which were decided in favor of the Angevins.

1520 Guise went to a younger branch of the House of Lorraine, starting with Claude de Lorraine, for whom the county was elevated to a duchy in 1528.

The title became extinct in 1688, Guise went to Anna, Countess Palatine of simmering, a great-granddaughter of Charles II de Lorraine, duc de Mayenne (whose mother had married the 5th Duke of Guise ), although she was not the heiress primogeniture (which was the Duke of Mantua and Montferrat ). The title of duke in 1704 for her and her husband, Henri III. Jules de Bourbon, prince de Condé, newly awarded.

After the extinction of the Condé family in the male line in 1830, went duchy and title to the house of Orléans, descendants of Anna's granddaughter Louise Elisabeth de Bourbon- Condé and their daughter Louise Henriette de Bourbon -Conti, Duchess of Orléans; the title was used in the 19th century as a courtesy title for family members, first for the three sons of Henri d' Orléans, duc d' Aumale, then for Jean, the son of Robert d' Orléans, duc de Chartres. Jean Pierre Clément Marie d' Orléans, duc de Guise in 1926 the Orléanist pretender to the French throne.
