Czech Senate election, 2012

In the Senate election in the Czech Republic 2012 27 of the 81 seats were elected in the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The first round was held on 12 and 13 October 2012, the run-off elections on 19 and 20 October 2012.

Starting position

Was elected one-third of the senators. Of the senators whose term of office expired, belonged to 14 of the liberal-conservative Občanská demokratická strana (ODS ), the six socially democratic Česká strana sociálně demokratická ( CSSD ) and four of the Christian Democratic Křesťanská a demokratická unie - Československé strana Lidová. The remaining three senators were members of the Communist Komunistická strana Čech a Moravy, the conservative TOP 09 and the regional electoral association Ostravak. Overall, the strongest party in the Senate was before the election, the CSSD with 39 seats against the ODS with 25 seats. In the Senate election of 2010, the CSSD had already won an absolute majority of seats in the Senate, but lost it again by two party outlets.

Since the House of Representatives election 2010 ruled a bourgeois coalition of ODS, TOP 09 and veci veřejné (VV) under Petr Necas. The latter, however, had left the coalition in April 2012 and the government had only by the VV elimination LIDEM a majority in the House. In the Senate, the government had a majority.

Result

The CSSD could win seven seats and thus won an absolute majority of seats in the Senate. The ODS lost ten seats. In addition, the Greens and for the first time, the Pirate Party won a seat, this came two independents.
