Darío Castrillón Hoyos

Darío Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos ( born July 4, 1929 in Medellín, Colombia) is a retired cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Darío Castrillón Hoyos studied in Medellín and Rome Catholic theology and philosophy and received his doctorate in canon law. In addition, he specialized in the areas of sociology of religion, business ethics and political science. In 1952 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders and was initially rural communities and subsequently used as a vicar in two as a teacher of canon law.

Darío Castrillón Hoyos 1971 by Pope Paul VI. appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Pereira and titular bishop of Villa Regis. On 18 July 1971 he was awarded by the then Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia, Angelo Palmas, episcopal ordination.

In 1976 he became Bishop of Pereira. From 1983 to 1987 he was Secretary General, 1987-1991 president of the Latin American Episcopal Council CELAM. 1992 Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Bucaramanga. Four years later Castrillon Hoyos was appointed Head of the Congregation for the Clergy and cooperated with the release of the new Catholic catechism.

On 21 February 1998 he was admitted in recognition of his services as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano in the College of Cardinals and was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy. In April 2000 he also took over the management of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei. From 2004 to 2010 he was Grand Prior of the Order of Constantine.

On 31 October 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation of Cardinal Hoyos by the Office of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy on. Between 23 February 2007 to 1 March 2008 he held the office of cardinal proto- deacon. On 1 March 2008, Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos was elevated to cardinal priests per hac vice. Work
