Darren Pang

Darren Pang ( born February 17, 1964 in Meaford, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender and is currently working as a sports commentator for the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League.

Career

Darren Pang started his career in 1981 in the Canadian Junior Football League OHL with the Belleville Bulls. During his second season, he moved within the league to the Ottawa 67 's. 1983/84 then he could win the Memorial Cup with Ottawa and has received numerous awards, including the best goalkeepers in the Memorial Cup finals.

After he had drawn attention to himself by these successes, he was committed as a free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks. He could also be the same in the 1984/85 season his first game in the NHL deny, but graduated from the bulk of the season in the IHL with the Milwaukee Admirals, the farm team of the Blackhawks. After two more years in the IHL with the Saginaw Gears in the fall of 1987 he was able to finally penetrated in the NHL squad and contested the 1987/88 season as the number one on the Blackhawks. He ended up in third place in the election for the Calder Memorial Trophy for the best rookie of the season and was All- Rookie elected to the NHL team. Also in the 1988/89 season he was the goalkeeper, but could not convince with good performances and was sent in the autumn of 1989 in the IHL to the Indianapolis Ice, where he spent the 1989/90 season.

In the fall of 1990, he was again invited to the training camp of the Chicago Blackhawks. On September 21, he retired in training camp a serious knee injury that eventually meant the end of career.

He remained the Hockey faithful and worked for several years as a coach. From 1996 to 1999 he was assistant coach of the hockey team of the University of Notre Dame from 2002 to 2004, he coached the goalkeepers in the Indianapolis Ice of the CHL.

But greater popularity he achieved through his work in radio and television. For the TV channel ESPN, ABC and NBC, he worked as a reporter and commentator for NHL games. For NBC, he worked at the Olympic Winter Games 2002. He currently belongs to the TV team, the Phoenix Coyotes and works partly during the playoffs for the Canadian channel TSN.

Darren Pang 's best friend is Steve Yzerman, the longtime captain of the Detroit Red Wings, he already knows from teenage years. When Yzerman 's wedding Pang was best man. As was the jersey of Steve Yzerman with the number 19 on 2 January 2007 officially closed by the Red Wings and hung from the ceiling of Joe Louis Arena, Darren Pang conducted the ceremony.
