David Garnett

David Garnett (born 9 March 1892 in Brighton, East Sussex, . † February 17, 1981 in Montcuq, Dépt Lot) was a British writer, publisher and member of the Bloomsbury Group.

Life and work

David Garnett was the only son of the publishing lecturer Edward Garnett and Constance Garnett of the translator; his grandfather was Richard Garnett.

Garnett wrote grotesque novels in which he practiced criticism of society by means of juxtaposition of humans and animals. His first literary success was the novel Lady Into Fox, in which an English housewife suddenly turns into a vixen, which can be difficult for everyone involved, and their marriage is an original treatment of the werewolf theme. With A Man In The Zoo, he left a book about a man follow, which can be exhibit in the zoo. He led in the 1920s, together with Francis Birrell a bookstore in London. Together with Francis Meynell, he founded Nonesuch Press. Garnett wrote the novel Aspects of Love, on which is based the eponymous musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. For a time he worked for the British Ministry of Information, a propaganda device during the Second World War.

In his youth he had a homosexual relationship with Duncan Grant. In 1921 he married his first wife, Rachel Alice " Ray" Marshall ( 1891-1940 ), sister of Frances Partridge. With her he had two sons; the elder, Richard Garnett Duncan Carey ( b. 1923 ), was a publishing editor and later wrote a biography of his grandmother Constance Garnett. In 1942 he married the daughter of his ex- friend Duncan Grant, Angelica Bell. The couple had four daughters. After the separation of Angelica, he moved to France and lived until his death in 1981 at the Chateau de Charry, Montcuq ( Cahors ).
