Donald Wuerl

Donald William Wuerl, Cardinal ( born November 12, 1940 in Pittsburgh, USA) is the Archbishop of Washington.

Life

Donald W. Wuerl studied theology and philosophy at the Pontifical North American College and received on December 17, 1966 by the rector of the college, Bishop Francis Frederick Reh, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. At the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, he received his doctorate in theology.

On November 30, 1985, he was appointed in Seattle by Pope John Paul II, titular bishop of Rossmarkaeum and auxiliary bishop. The episcopal ordination he received on 6 January 1986 in Rome by the pope in person. Co-consecrators were Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli and the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, Bernardin Gantin.

On February 11, 1988, he was appointed Bishop of Pittsburgh. On 16 May 2006 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. as successor to Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick Archbishop of Washington and thus to the pastors of a diaspora diocese with a Catholic share of only 14%.

He was chairman of the Commission for Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. bishops' conference, also vice chairman of the Commission for the Church teaching. He was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the National Catholic Educational Association. Donald Wuerl since 1999 chaplain of the Order of Malta in the United States, also Knight of the Knights of Columbus. His works The Teaching of Christ and The Catholic Way are bestsellers.

In solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal priest with the titular church of St. Peter in Chains in the College of Cardinals.

Cardinal Wuerl took after the resignation of Benedict XVI. the conclave in 2013 in part, was elected to the Pope Francis.
