Drama Desk Award

The Drama Desk Award is a New York Theatre Prize, which is awarded annually in several categories. He is the only New York Theatre Award, which is awarded not separately under the categories Broadway, Off- Broadway and off -off - Broadway productions, so that about large-scale professional musical productions and small backyard productions compete in a category against each other. He has been awarded since 1955, and applies in addition to the Tony Awards as the most important New York theater price.

History

The Drama Desk organization founded in 1949 by New York theater critics, journalists, editors and publishers, to educate the public in terms of theater. 1955, the first Vernon Rice Awards were presented. They were named after the theater critic Vernon Rice, who was a pioneer of criticism of off- Broadway productions in the New York press. Initially, only off-Broadway performances were honored, were added and Broadway productions until 1969. 1964, the name of the price has changed. Since 1975, in addition to the winners and the nominees will be announced for each price. In order to remain true to its goal of training, the organization also hosts panel discussions with theater professionals.

Expiration

All employees and members of the nominating jury volunteers, the organization is recognized as a charitable organization. More than 140 critics, journalists and editors select the prize winners from the nominated productions, and people. The annual awards ceremony will be held in the LaGuardia Concert Hall of the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School at Lincoln Center often.

Award winners

For Edward Albee, Wendy Wasserstein and George C. Scott the Drama Desk Award was the first theater prize, with which they were honored.
