Druzhkivka

Druschkiwka (Ukrainian Дружківка; Russian Дружковка / Druzhkovka ) is a city in the Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine with 60 813 inhabitants ( 2013).

Geography

Geographical location

The city lies 12 kilometers south of Kramatorsk and 72 kilometers north of Donetsk Oblasthauptstadt located. It belongs to the agglomeration of Kramatorsk and lies at the confluence of the rivers Kasennyj Torez ( Казенний Торець ) and Krywyj Torez ( Кривий Торець ).

Municipality

The municipality has a total of 70 286 inhabitants ( 2012). Besides Druschkiwka belong to the municipality and the settlements of urban type Nowohryhoriwka ( Новогригорівка ) Nowomykolajiwka ( Новомиколаївка ) Olexijewo - Druschkiwka ( Олексієво - Дружківка ) and Rajske ( Райське ), the villages of Krasny Kut ( Красний Кут ) and Tscherwonosorjane ( Червонозоряне ) and the settlement Starorajske ( Старорайське ).

History

The place was founded by Empress Catherine the Great in 1781 and evolved greatly after the construction of the railway line Kursk - Kharkov - Azov in the 1890s. Through the establishment of several industries in the city continued to grow under Soviet times and received city rights in 1938. 1945, the still existing tram Druschkiwka opened with currently three lines (of formerly six).
