Edmond Decottignies

Edmond DECOTTIGNIES ( born December 3, 1893 in Comines, † June 3, 1963 ) was a French weightlifter.

DECOTTIGNIES was a good gymnast as a boy and discovered in 1911 his talent for weightlifting. He was a member of the club Travailleurs de Comines and participated even before the First World War in championships, including in the European Championships 1913 Nice. Results are not known.

To DECOTTIGNIES greatest success was the start of the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924. He won there the gold medal in the lightweight with a capacity of 440 kg in the pentathlon before Zwerina Anton, Austria, 427.5 kg and Bohumil Durdys, Czechoslovakia, 425 kg. The competition was made up of one-arm snatch and jerk and beidarmigem Press, Snatch and jerk.

In the years 1921, 1923 and 1924 DECOTTIGNIES was also champion of France.

In honor of Edmond DECOTTIGNIES is, in Comines carried out in 2006 already for the eleventh time the weightlifting tournament Edmond Memorial DECOTTIGNIES.
