The root -lottery syndicate BSG Bremerhaven was formed in 1991 from the basketball departments of the OSC Bremerhaven Bremerhaven and the SFL. The OSC Bremerhaven previously played of the season 1981/1982 to 1985/1986 season in the 2nd Bundesliga basketball and was in the 1985/1986 season to win the promotion round the northern squadron of the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga. Because the financing of the season could not be assured, however, was abandoned at the start of the National Basketball League, retiring at the then national league.

2003 divided one of the first men's team (which since 2001 plays under the name of polar bears ) the BSG Bremerhaven in Bremerhaven polar bears Marketing GmbH. The team plays since the 2005/2006 season in the National Basketball League. The gaming community BSG Bremerhaven Bremerhaven cooperates with more polar bears in the youth field.

After the 2008/2009 season, the Polar Bears Bremerhaven found in the basketball league in last place again. With only 7 wins and 27 defeats they finished at the end of the season in the relegation zone. However, due to the withdrawal of the Giants Nördlingen and the Cologne 99ers two wildcards from the BBL were advertised and the polar bears were awarded the contract. Thus, the polar bears could go in the top German league at the start in the season 2009/2010.
