Eli Sims Shorter

Eli Sims Shorter ( born March 15, 1823 in Monticello, Jasper County, Georgia, † April 29, 1879 in Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama ) was an American politician and represented the state of Alabama in the U.S. Congress.

Career

Eli Sims Shorter was born on March 15, 1823 in Monticello, Jasper County, Georgia. His father, Dr. Reuben C. Shorter, a physician and planter, immigrated as a young man from Virginia to Georgia and became a leader of the emerging Jacksonian Party. 1833 Shorter's family moved to Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama. There he attended the public schools and graduated in 1844 at Yale College (now Yale University), where he received his Bachelor of Laws. He was admitted as a lawyer in the same year and then opened a law practice with his brother, John Gill, in Eufalua, Alabama. In addition, he engaged in agriculture.

Shorter was elected as a Democrat to the forty-third and forty-fourth in the conference. His service extended from March 4, 1855 to March 3, 1859. Subsequently, he decided to dedicate his work as a lawyer in Eufaula, Alabama resume.

Eli Sims Shorter was with Marietta Fannin, a niece of Col. Fannin of " Alamo " married. They had four children together: Annie Bell, William A., Emory and Henry. His older brother John Gill Shorter was 1861-1863 Governor of Alabama.
