The Elk Township is one of 16 townships in Jackson County in the southwest of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the Elk Township had 1907 inhabitants.

Geography

The Elk Township is located approximately 50 kilometers east of the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Missouri. The mouth of the Ohio at the intersection of the states of Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky is located around 130 km south.

The Elk Township is located at 37 ° 54'11 " north latitude and 89 ° 12'19 " west longitude and extending over 96.46 km ², spread over 93.76 km ² land and 2.7 km ² water surface. The Township is drained by the Little Muddy River.

The Elk Township is located in the extreme northeast of Jackson County and is bordered to the north by the Perry County, on the east by the Franklin County and to the southeast by the Williamson County. Within the Jackson County borders the Elk Township on the east by the Vergennes Township, to the southeast by the Somerset Township, and on the south by the De Soto Township.

Traffic

In north -south U.S. Highway 51 runs through the Elk Township. All other roads are County Roads or more subordinate and partly unpaved roadways.

Parallel to Highway 51 runs a railway line of the former Illinois Central Railroad, now part of the Canadian National Railway. This route is also used by Amtrak.

With the Southern Illinois Airport ( 15 km south ) and the Williamson County Regional Airport ( around 30 km south-east ), there are two regional airports near the Elk Township. The nearest major airport is the Lambert -Saint Louis International Airport ( some 160 km north-west ).
