Elyria is a city in the north of the U.S. state of Ohio, located near the south shore of Lake Erie at the Black River and 38 km west-southwest of Cleveland. It is the administrative seat ( county seat ) of Lorain County and is part of the metropolitan Cleveland - Lorain - Elyria. At the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 55 953.

History

Elyria was founded in 1817 by Herman Ely in northeastern Ohio at the fork of the Black River. The current mayor of Elyria is William M. Grace.

Education

The city is the seat of Lorain County Community College. In addition to the Elyria High School and Westwood and the Northwood Junior High School, there are nine Elementary Schools and the Eastern Heights Middle School in the city. In addition, there are denominational private schools such as the Elyria Catholic High School, the Open Door Christian Schools High and the First Baptist Christian High School.
