Emanuel Reicher

Emanuel Reicher ( born June 18, 1849 in Salzberg, Austria Empire, † May 15, 1924 in Berlin, Weimar Republic ) was an Austrian actor and director.

Life

As a student of Otto Brahm Rich stood for innovative naturalistic play. The Austrian theater critic Hermann Bahr described him as the father of the German drama.

Even as a high school student Emanuel Reicher emerged as acting talent. Under a pseudonym, he debuted at the Theatre in Krakow. With great ambition and diligence he sought an exemplary expression to obtain. He soon became one of the best and most expressive actor in Germany.

After his Munich debut of 1873 and the local success, he signed a contract at the Residenz-Theater in Berlin and gained there a reputation as one of Germany's finest Shakespeare interpreters. This was followed by an engagement at the direction of Otto Brahm Lessingtheater. In addition, Rich took over the management of the local theater school. As a teacher of a new generation of German actor, he refused any kind of virtuosity from and supported and encouraged young talents. In 1889 he was among the founders of the theater club Free Theatre. In 1899 he founded together with Friedrich Moest in Berlin Reichersche Academy of Dramatic Art. Moest in 1901 together with his wife Else Schoch - Moest, and owner of this facility.

1908 played Rich, along with his daughter Hedwig, in Goethe's Iphigenie on the World Esperanto Congress in Dresden.

Later he went to the USA, where he was surprised by the outbreak of the First World War. As director of the New York Theatre Guild, he propagated as a result the new style of the German theater. In 1923 he returned to Germany and was guest-starred on the Residenz-Theater and at the Renaissance Theater in Berlin.

Rich was married to the opera singer Hedwig Kindermann and father of Frank (1875-1965), Hedwiga (1884-1971) and Ernst Reicher (1885-1936), all actors were also.

His tomb is located on the southwest Stahnsdorf.
