Erie Panthers

The Erie Panthers were an American ice hockey team from Erie, Pennsylvania. The team played from 1988 to 1996 in the East Coast Hockey League.

History

The Erie Panthers was founded in 1988 as a franchise of the East Coast Hockey League, in which they were one of the five founding members. The team replaced the Erie Golden Blades, who played from 1982 to 1987 in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. In their first two seasons, the team finished the regular season each on the first place of the ECHL, as this was not yet divided into Divisions. In the playoffs for the Kelly Cup but they did not get beyond the second round. After they had always reached the playoffs in the first five years of its existence, they missed them after they were classified in the North Division three times in a row. Then, the franchise was moved by its owners to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where it participated in the subsequent period under the name Baton Rouge Kingfish of the game operation of the ECHL.

The gap left by the relocation of the Panthers in the city was filled in 1996 by the Erie Otters who compete ever since in the Canadian Junior Football League Ontario Hockey League.
