Estonian Writers' Union

The Estonian Writers' Union (Estonian Eesti Kirjanike Liit, abbreviated EKL ) is the union of the Estonian writer, literary translator and literary critic.

History

The Estonian Writers' Union was born on October 8, 1922 under the name Eesti Kirjanikkude Liit on the III. Congress of Estonian writers founded the town hall of Tallinn. In Tallinn he also took its first seat in 1927, he moved him to Tartu. On April 27, 1923, the Association began publishing the monthly magazine Looming, one of the most important literary magazines in Estonia is today.

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia the Estonian Writers' Union was declared on 19 October 1940 by the occupation authorities for dissolved. In its place the "Soviet Writers 'Union of Estonia ' occurred ( Eesti Nõukogude Kirjanike Liit ) on 8 / 9 October 1943 was called to Moscow to life. In 1958 he was called " Writers' Union of the Estonian SSR " ( Eesti NSV Kirjanike Liit ) and was active until the end of the Soviet Union.

During the German occupation of Estonia from 1941 to 1944, the original Estonian Writers' Union continued unofficially continued his work. 1945 " Estonian Foreign Association of Writers " ( Välismaine Eesti Kirjanike Liit ) was founded as an organization of exiled Estonian writer in Stockholm. He saw himself as a counter-organization of regimented by the Communists and placed under censorship literary scene in Estonia during the period of the Soviet Union.

With the restoration of expression and press freedom in Estonia and the restoration of Estonian independence was the name of the club in Estonia in 1991 Estonian Writers Union. The international federation kicked him in October 2000 and completely at disbanded.

Currently, the Estonian Writers' Union has 302 members (as of July 2007) and represents a writer, literary translator, literary critics and scholars. Its seat is located in Tallinn's Old Town, a branch office in Tartu. The Estonian Writers' Union also has a summer house in Käsmu on the Baltic Sea, which is regularly provided to domestic and foreign writers and translators available.
