Estoril [ ɨʃtuɾiɫ ] is a municipality ( freguesia ) in a circle ( concelho ) of Cascais. It is a seaside resort on the Costa do Estoril, the coast to the west of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, on the edge of the Estremadura region. Estoril is traditionally regarded as the retreat for the rich upper class.

History

In Estoril, there remains of Roman villas found from the time of Christ's birth. Since the 8th century Estoril was part of the emirate, then to the Caliphate of Córdoba. 1147 Estoril fell after the Siege of Lisbon to Alfonso I., the first king of Portugal.

For centuries lived Estoril mainly on fishing. Estoril was the last place in their home country, the saw the Portuguese explorers when they set out from Lisbon, and also the first on their return. Fortifications on the coast attest to the fact that Estoril had to fight off multiple attacks of pirates.

Estoril was the exile of the Spanish pretender to the throne Juan de Borbón y Battenberg during the time of Franco's dictatorship in Spain. Culture and sights

Since the early 20th century, the picturesque coast is on the outskirts of Estoril one of the attractions of the Portuguese tourism. The center of Estoril consists essentially of swanky hotels along palm-lined avenues and ends at a busy summer stretch of beach.

Having already passed here before casinos, the Casino Estoril in 1931 was opened. Here were also repeatedly rotated scenes for national and international films, such as 1969 for James Bond 007 - On Her Majesty. The casino is also known as a venue for a variety of cultural events.

The traditional Cascais Jazz Festival was moved here in 1990 and since then is called Jazz Festival do Estoril.

Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival aligned - Since 2007, here is the Film Festival LEFFest.

In 2009 took place in Estoril the XIX. Ibero-American summit held.

Sports

Near Estoril is the Circuito do Estoril, a track that is not used more for Formula 1 race ( Grand Prix of Portugal ), but will be held at the annual Grand Prix of Portugal for motorcycles.

The local football club Estoril Praia played in the Erstligasaison 2004/ 05 for the first time in the 1st Portuguese League, in which he takes up again after interim descent and re- ascent to the 2012/13 season. Play their home games at the Estádio António Coimbra, the club because of Mota.

Estoril has hosted the Portuguese Badminton Championship 1970.

Despite its dense population and its social, historical and cultural significance leads Estoril neither the status of a city ( Cidade ) is still a small town ( Vila ).

Estoril is the seat of an eponymous municipality ( freguesia ) in a circle ( concelho ) of Cascais. On 30 June 2011, the municipality had 26 179 inhabitants on an area of 8.8 square km.

Traffic

About the S-Bahn suburban trains like the Linha de Cascais along the coastline of Estoril train station is Lisbon ( Estação Cais do Sodré ) in the east and connected to the more Western Cascais. The journey takes about 40 minutes.

The A5 motorway runs past Estoril with its own exit.
