Eucumbene Dam

The Lake Eucumbene was created as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro - system through an earth dam, which impounds the Eucumbene River in the Snowy Mountains in southern New South Wales in Australia. The lake is located about 40 kilometers from Cooma and about 80 kilometers from Canberra. The largest reservoir of 16 dams of the Snowy Mountains Hydro - system is about 1200 meters above sea level.

The dam is 116 m high and 636 m wide at the base. The artificial reservoir to hold nine times more water than the natural harbor of Sydney. The dam was built in 1956-1958. The lake is located in the Kosciuszko National Park.

In the Lake Eucumbene opens the Eucumbene River, a tunnel from the Tumut Pondage and water from the Tantangara Dam.

When the dam was flooded, the resort Adaminaby went down, lying on the side of the Snowy Mountains Highway. It was built on another site, and is the nearest village to the lake. At low water level the wood post foundations of the old buildings are visible. In the lake fishing for trout tourists, according to rainbow trout and brown trout. The fish were used and therefore also salmon are in the lake.
