FÃ¥glum brothers

The Fåglum brothers were the Swedish cyclist Gosta ( born 1940 ), Sture ( 1942-1983 ), Erik (1944 ) and Tomas Pettersson ( b. 1947 ), who dominated in the 1960s as a quartet, the team time trial on the road.

Careers in cycling

The brothers were named after a district of Vårgårda where they grew up and for the " Fåglums Cykelklubb " started. 1963, 1964 and 1966 were Gösta, Sture and Erik Swedish champion in the team time trial ( it started triple - teams). At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, the three brothers gained together with Sven Hamrin bronze in the team time trial. In 1967, the four brothers were together in the team time trial world champion for the first time. At the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968, the " Fåglum Brothers " won silver. In 1969, the quartet was a third time world champion in the team time trial. 1970 all the brothers were professionals; the most successful was the oldest brother, Gösta, who in 1970 finished third in the Tour de France and the 1971 Giro d' Italia won. Together with his brother Tomas, he won also the 1970 Trofeo Baracchi.

Honors

The Fåglum brothers were in 1967 awarded the " Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal - " for their athletic performance. In Vårgårda where they last started for the " Vårgårda Cykelklubb ", was built in her honor a monument on the square and the Museum " Dessa fantastiska Fåglums " opened.

Name and Family

Except Gösta brothers later took the last name " Fåglum " because the name Pettersson is very common in Sweden.

The UCI Road World Championships 2011 was a grandson of Sture Pettersson, Marcus Fåglum Karlsson, fourth in the individual time trial of the juniors. Also whose father John Karlsson was a cyclist, competed in the 1988 Olympics and won bronze in the team time trial.
