Faustino Sainz Muñoz

Faustino Sainz Muñoz ( born June 5, 1937 in Almaden, Ciudad Real, Spain, † 31 October 2012 in Madrid) was a diplomat of the Holy See.

Life

Faustino Sainz Muñoz studied philosophy and Catholic theology. At the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, he completed a doctorate degree in canon law. On 19 December 1964 he was ordained a priest and was 1965/66 Vicar in Somosierra. From 1965 to 1967, he taught law at the International Movement of Catholic Students ( IMCS ) of the Pax Romana was ICMICA and 1966/67, Diocesan Representative of the IMCS. 1966/67, he also served in pastoral ministry in the Madrid parish of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción.

Sainz appeared in 1970 in the diplomatic service of the Holy See and graduated from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. He was first in the Pontifical Representations in Senegal and Scandinavia as well as working in the Public Affairs of the Church of the Vatican Secretariat of State. In 1975 he was a member of the Delegation of the Holy See to the preparatory discussions for the seconded Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE ). He was then in the Vatican Secretariat of State responsible for relations with Poland, Hungary and later the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. In 1978 he accompanied Cardinal Antonio Samore and successfully a military conflict between Chile and Argentina away ( Beagle conflict). In 1979 he accompanied Pope John Paul II during the trip in his native Poland.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 29 October 1988 Titular Archbishop of Novaliciana and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Cuba. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli on December 18, 1988 Co-consecrators were Archbishop Curia Maximino Romero de Lema and Angel Goicoechea Suquía Cardinal, Archbishop of Madrid. He has contributed with his work in Cuba and the many discussions with Fidel Castro to the positive development of the Catholic Church in Cuba.

On 7 October 1992 John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Zaire ( Democratic Republic of Congo from 1997 ). The Apostolic Nunciature in 1994 during the genocide in Rwanda a sought refuge. On 21 January 1999 he was appointed the first Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union in Brussels; he was much involved in the development of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe.

On December 11, 2004, the appointment as apostolic nuncio took place in the UK. After a mild stroke on May 16, 2010, he did not show it take Pope Benedict XVI. welcome on his apostolic journey to the United Kingdom in September 2010 in Edinburgh. On 2 December 2010 he finished his service in the UK with a thanksgiving service at Westminster Cathedral. Pope Benedict XVI. assumed to be pre- mounted for health reasons resignation on December 5, 2010. He died of a brain tumor. He was buried in the parish church of Concepcion de Nuestra Señora de Madrid; the ceremony headed Antonio María Cardinal Rouco, Archbishop of Madrid and President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference.

Faustino Sainz enjoyed a great reputation due to its activity in Chile, England and Wales. He was honored with an honorary doctorate from the rights of the University of Aberdeen in 2007.
