FC Gomel

The FK Gomel ( Belarusian ФК Гомель, FK Gomel, Russian ФК Гомель / FK Gomel; often FC Gomel) is a Belarusian football club which is based in Gomel, the second largest city in the country on the border with Ukraine. The Belarusian Champion of 2003 succeeded in 2010 after a year of resurgence in the second division Wyschejschaja Liha, the highest division of Belarus.

History

The club was founded in 1959 as a locomotive Homel. In 1964 it was renamed Spartak, a year later in Gomselmash. The present name was given to the FK Gomel in 1995.

After Belarus gained its independence, belonged Homel 1992 of the founding members of the Wyschejschaja Liha, the highest football league in the Wyschejschaja Liha country. Initially, the team placed only in the lower half of the table, in 1995 it rose from 2 in the league. The back in the Bundesliga in 1998, the subsequent season was finished in fifth place.

2002 FK Gomel won in the final against BATE Borisov first time the Belarusian Cup. As a Cup Winners' Cup, the club took part in the qualification for the UEFA Cup, which has survived in two games against HJK Helsinki. In the first preliminary round of the competition Gomel met the FC Schalke 04 and retired after a 1:4 in the first leg ( which was held in Minsk ) and a 0:4 in Gelsenkirchen.

In 2003, the FK Gomel by winning the Belarusian Championship celebrated his biggest success. However, because the team in the following years was not able. In the Champions League season 2004/ 05 failed Homel in qualifying in the Albanian representatives SK Tirana. 2007 won Homel behind the team BATE Borisov of the runner. In the UEFA Cup 2007/08 season the team already retired but in the qualifier against Polish club Legia Warsaw.

After a 11th place in 2008, the team finished second in the League Season 2009 the 12th Place and rose for the second time after 1995 in the sub-prime Pershaya Liha from. It was the FK Gomel victim of a reduction in the highest league from 14 to 12 clubs. In the 2010 season succeeded as a sovereign master of Pershaya Liha the direct promotion back to the top flight. 2011, qualified the FK Gomel to the 3.Platzes occupy in the league for the Europa League, where the club competes in the third qualifying round against the 18 -time English champions Liverpool FC. The first leg was only narrowly lost 0-1.
