FC Ripensia Timișoara

Ripensia Timişoara was a Romanian football club based in Timişoara. He became four times champion of Romanian and Romanian Cup Winners' Cup twice.

History

Ripensia Timişoara was founded by Dr. Cornel Lazar, former President of Chinezul Timişoara, in 1928. The name goes back to the Roman province of Dacia Ripensis, today's Banat. The players came mainly from Politehnica Timişoara and Chinezul.

Ripensia was the first professional football club in Romania. Therefore the team until 1932 could not participate in official championships. In the 1930s Ripensia dominated the Romanian football along with Venus Bucharest and Romanian champions four times ( 1932/33, 1934/35, 1935/36, 1937 /38) and two Romanian Cup Winners (1934, 1936). Twice the runner-up could be achieved. In 1938, Ripensia part in the Mitropa Cup and was eliminated after a win in the first round against AC Milan in the second round against Ferencvaros Budapest.

After the Second World War Ripensia was no longer able to build on the previous successes due to financial problems and the new Communist government. After two years in Divizia B and C Divizia the club was dissolved in 1948 and replaced by Electrica Timişoara, who had taken his name from the stadium of his predecessor association.

In 2000, the football coach Sorin Badea founded an association called Clubul Sportiv Ripensia 2000 Timişoara SA, which he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the traditional club. The goal was also to make the heirs of the original Ripensia shareholders locate in order to participate in the new club. The club plays in the year 2007 in the fourth Romanian League.
